The Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) is a government-funded program that covers all expenses for international students in Korea.

Each year, thousands apply for it but only a select few are chosen based on academic background, goals and interests. One of them is Sofiia Aranson from Russia, who was accepted to Yonsei University to study biotechnology through the GKS.

The following are excerpts from an April 11 interview with her via Telegram.

Sofia has been interested in Korean culture since age 6, when she was first introduced to Korean cuisine, and now achieved her dream of studying abroad in Korea.

Sofiia Aranson says her interest in Korean culture began at age 6 through Hansik (traditional cuisine).

How did you grow interested in Korea?

Korean culture captivated me early on when my family and I started visiting Korean restaurants every weekend when I was 6. By ninth grade, I decided to pursue my degree in Korea, and it took 4 1/2 years of preparation to make this dream a reality.

Why study biotechnology at Yonsei University?

I've always exceled in exact sciences, and my passion for studying disease and therapy methods led me to biotech. I chose Yonsei because its program perfectly aligns with my career goals. Korea resonates with me in many ways, from its mentality and traditions to its education system and career opportunities.

How did you discover and pursue the GKS?

I discovered the GKS through a YouTube video in 2020. Coming from a modest financial background, I immediately knew this was my opportunity. The application process was challenging, from technical difficulties during the embassy interview to spending 1 1/2 months gathering documents and traveling across the city. But these challenges taught me valuable lessons in independence and problem-solving.

What is your advice for those who want to apply for the GKS?

Confidence is crucial. Believe in yourself and maintain a positive mindset. Also, learn Korean; it's both practical and respectful to understand your host country's language.

What is the key takeaway from your GKS journey?

"If you think you can do it and if you think you can't, you're right in both cases." My success came from being authentic, having clear goals, and showing genuine passion and ambition in both my essays and interview.
