Korea this month will assume the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
U.N. headquarters on Aug. 31 said Korea, a non-permanent member of the UNSC, will officially begin its term on Sept. 2 by presiding over informal consultations on adopting the council's agenda.
This is the first time in 15 months for Korea to assume the role. As rotating president, Seoul is expected to influence discussions on key global issues including the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the war in Ukraine and shape global public opinion.
The UNSC, the primary body responsible for maintaining international peace and security. Its 15 member states hold the presidency on a monthly basis, and the presidency chairs formal meetings and informal consultations and represents the council to other UN member states and subsidiaries.
Korea is a non-permanent member of the UNSC for the 2024-25 term.
